The Widows’ and Orphans’ Aid Association of the San Francisco Police Department held their monthly meeting on Tuesday July 12, 2022 via Zoom Technology.
Roll Call: Vice President Lou Barberini, Secretary Mark McDonough, Treasurer Dean Taylor, Trustees Ryan Walsh, Leroy Lindo, Jim O’Meara, Maureen Leonard, and Administrative Assistant Sally Foster were present. President Rob Forneris and Trustee Ray Kane were excused.
Approval of the Minutes: Trustee Jim O’Meara made a motion to accept the June 2022 minutes. Trustee Ryan Walsh seconded the motion. The motion passed.
Receiving Applications, Suspensions and Reinstatements: There are no new applications, suspensions or reinstatements. All suspended members from April 1, 2022 will be dropped from membership if their dues and fees are not received by August 20, 2022. The WOAA, by order of the President on Tuesday August 9, 2020 will drop all suspended members who have not responded to their Suspension Letters and have not paid their 2022 dues and fines. Retired suspended members total fifty plus. Active suspended members total approximately fifteen.
Communications and Bills: Treasurer Taylor read aloud our monthly bills including our insurance bill and beneficiary claims for the listed beneficiaries of Robert Alberigi, Mario Busalacchi, and Don Schneider. Vice President Louis Barberini made a motion to pay the bills and the beneficiary claims. Trustee Jim O’Meara seconded the motion to pay the bills and claims. The motion passed.

Report of Trustees: Douglas Koppang, age 97: Douglas Koppang was born on December 2, 1924 in Seattle, Washington. Doug was listed as a ‘student’, prior to his Law Enforcement career. Doug entered the San Francisco Police Department on July 7, 1947. Doug was assigned to Star# 761, and worked the following assignments during his nineteen plus year career: Potrero Police Station (no month given, 1947), Northern Police Station (March 8, 1954), and finally to Narcotics (March 17, 1958). Doug was promoted to the rank of Police Inspector on March 16, 1959. Doug retired with a disability pension on November 26, 1966. AWARDS: Inspector Douglas Koppang and Officer Charles Wettstein were awarded with 2nd grade Medals of Valor for services rendered on Monday January 1, 1962. Koppang and Wettstein an armed suspect who had fired three shots at a soldier. Koppang and Wettstein responded to the scene and located the suspect who was sitting in an automobile. Koppang and Wettstein approached the vehicle and pulled the occupant from the vehicle and disarming him. Koppang and Wettstein arrested the suspect without having to use their firearms.

Adjournment: Vice President Barberini led the WOAA Board in a moment of silence for all our fallen members. Vice President Barberini scheduled our next meeting for Tuesday August 9, 2022.
