The Widows’ and Orphans’ Aid Association of the San Francisco
Police Department met on Tuesday July 10, 2018. The meeting was held at 850 Bryant
Street, room #150 in San Francisco, California.
Roll Call: President Leroy Lindo,
Vice President Ray Kane, Secretary Mark McDonough, Treasurer Dean Taylor,
Trustees Jim O’Meara, Rob Forneris, Louis Barberini, and Ryan Walsh were
present. Trustee Al Luenow and Bookkeeper Sally Foster were excused.
Approval of the Minutes: Trustee Jim O’Meara made a motion to accept the
June 2018 minutes. Trustee Lou Barberini seconded the motion. The motion passed
without objection.
Applications; Suspensions and Reinstatements: No applications or
suspensions this month. Several suspended members sent their back dues and
fines, and one dropped member sent his back dues, fines, and a physician’s note
of his good health status. A motion to reinstate the suspended and dropped
members was made by Vice President Ray Kane. Trustee Jim O’Meara seconded the
motion. The motion passed without objection. The following suspended members
were reinstated: Debra Anderson, Michael
D. Becker, Chris Cassinelli, Amy Cole, Stu Flynn, Thomas Haymond, Mitchell
Holohan, Daniel L. O’Brien, Harry Paretchan, Jose Rosales, Donald Schneider,
Reginald Scott, and Harry Wielen. Dropped member Albert Fernandez was voted as
reinstated.
Communications and Bills: Treasurer Dean Taylor read aloud our monthly
bills, and our death benefits to be paid to beneficiaries. Trustee Jim O’Meara
made a motion to pay all the bills and death benefits. Trustee Lou Barberini
seconded the motion. The motion passed without objection. Death benefits to be
paid out, are to the beneficiaries of the following members who recently
passed: Lester Hance, Nick Marota, John Mino, Dennis Moody, Donald Ostrem, and
Charles Wettstein.

Report of Trustees: The WOAA Board was informed of the sad news of the
following members:
Joseph McCarthy, age 83: Joseph
McCarthy was born on October 4, 1934 in San Francisco, California to the late
Claire (Clancy) and Joseph Rafael McCarthy. After graduating from Sacred Heart
High School in San Francisco, Joe joined the United States Army and was
stationed in Vicenza, Italy where he discovered his love of travel, culture,
and adventure. Joe especially enjoyed his weekend trips to Harry’s Bar in
Venice. Joe graduated from City College of San Francisco and entered the San
Francisco Police Department on August 1, 1959. Joe was assigned to star #1425.
Joe, after graduating from the Police Academy, was assigned to Taraval Police
Station on October6, 1959. His career in Law Enforcement was short-lived when
he “transferred” to the San Francisco Fire Department on September 1, 1961. Joe considered the Fire Department as his
“true calling”, and rose through the ranks during his career. Joe retired in
1993 as a Battalion Chief. Joe stayed busy working for Maybelline, umpiring
softball games, attending Cal football games, and enjoying time with his
close-knit family. Joe met his beautiful future wife Barbara in 1959, and never
let her go. They married in 1950 and had four successful children. Joe
emphasized the importance of education and was very supportive and proud of his
children. Joe enjoyed his Saturday Martini nights after attending Mass. Joe had
a great sense of humor and the ability to befriend all. Joe was preceded in
death by his sister Marie Dean, step father John Arnold, brothers in law Steve
Geramoni, Ed Gulla, Emil Boitano, and John Burton (Judy). Joe is survived by
his wife Barbara, his son Joseph Michael McCarthy (Kristi), daughters Theresa
Heim (James), Michelle Benvenuto, and Kristine Peck (Sam); brother George
McCarthy(Honey); sisters Patti Geramoni and twin Claire Linney (John); brothers
in law Al Dean and Paul Burton (Klara); sisters in law Yvonne Gulla, Mary Lou
Sorensen (Pete). Florence Boitano, and Joan Rawlings (Gene); and several nieces,
nephews, and grandchildren.

Adjournment: President Lindo led the Board in a moment of silence for all our
fallen members. President Lindo adjourned the meeting and scheduled our next
meeting for Tuesday August 14, 2018. The meeting will be held at 850 Bryant
Street, in room 150 at 1230 hours, in San Francisco, California
